The club is a private club for the employees of the city of Los Angeles and is managed by a board of directors that is composed entirely of City Employees, both active and retired. In addition to offering exclusive discounts on theme park and movie tickets, the club also offers nationwide business insurance products.
But it’s a tough time for private clubs to attract new members. Membership at the City Club has dropped 4 percent in the past year, and the region’s other prominent private clubs—including the California Club, Jonathan Club and Regency Club—are suffering the same fate as penny-pinching businessmen take a hard look at hefty initiation fees and monthly dues.
In a move to address the trend, the City Club recently launched a campaign that promotes its membership benefits. Its newest offerings include a free Continental breakfast each day of the week and half off appetizer menu items. It’s also offering free classes for current members and a discount to bring in a friend. A sign in the lobby advertises that a new member can take 30 percent off their initiation fee and monthly dues for a full year if they bring a current member along.
