In folklore, a will-o’-the-wisp (Latin for “foolish fire”) is a luminescent light that appears in marshy areas. Its flame-like phosphorescence was said to mislead and guide travellers. It is believed that will-o’-the-wisps are the result of gases such as methane, diphosphane, and phosphine being released by decomposition in ponds and swamps.
A will-o’-the-wisp is also known as a jack-o’-lantern, friar’s lantern, or hinkypunk, and may have been personified as a ghost or sprite who carried a flickering light to lead foolish travellers into the marshes. In modern science, the luminescence is explained by the oxidation of methane and other organic compounds. The phosphine used in the will-o’-the-wisp glow is probably produced by the decomposition of fish and other dead organisms. It is thought that the gasses were initially trapped in bubbles in the marshy ground, but the conditions needed to produce these gases have been lost as ponds and swamps have been drained.
